Welcome to the website of Faringdon & District U3A. We hope that you will find much to interest you, whether you are already a member or merely browsing.

Faringdon U3A has been in existence since 2002 and currently has about 450 members. We think we offer something for all who are eligible to join us – anyone who is not in full time employment. We have a total of 50 interest groups, ranging from Astronomy to Art History, Bridge to Spanish and Family History to Opera. We also have monthly meetings in the Corn Exchange, Faringdon which offer the opportunity to hear fascinating talks as well as the chance to mix with other members. Our Newsletter is published every three months and contains up to date news of the activities of the Committee and Interest Groups as well as details of forthcoming monthly talks. Much of this information can also be found on this site. We are affiliated to the Third Age Trust, our parent body, but have our own constitution . Information about National activities that may be of interest to members, such as Summer Schools, Shared Learning Projects and other joint activities can be found here. In addition we have over recent years enjoyed our association with the Thames Valley Network of U3As. Information on forthcoming activities received from TVN can also be found here. This is a new and developing website and our hope is that members and, in particular, Group Leaders will become used to providing us with material to improve and enhance the information provided.

Membership renewal – 2018 renewals are now overdue.  Subscription renewal will be done differently this year, though the cost is the same as last year. For our U3A insurance purposes, your renewal and payment must be received before the end of January 2018, or your U3A membership will lapse and you won’t be eligible to attend General meetings or participate in any Group.

We hope that those who do internet banking will choose to use our on-line facility which will be available from 1st December. Fill in the on-line renewal form on the ‘Contacts & Membership’ page of our website and click ‘Submit’. Then log-on to your bank and pay Faringdon U3A the appropriate sum – details of sort code and account number etc. are all on the website. When we’ve received your online renewal form, you’ll get an email acknowledgement.

Don’t worry if you don’t use internet banking because you will have also received a Subscription Renewal form in a separate mailing in early January which you can complete and return with a cheque. You can also download and print the Renewal form from our website and complete & return it with a cheque.

If you pay online, please ensure that you make both the online payment and complete the form.  We cannot process your membership renewal until we have received your form.

It’s that time of year again! Our Annual General Meeting will be held on Thursday 12th April (before our normal monthly meeting) when one agenda item will be ‘Election of Committee members’.  Two members of the current Committee are standing down, so we need a couple of new recruits.

Being a Committee member is not onerous and our current Committee members enjoy their roles. We have a Committee meeting every couple of months (usually in the morning prior to an afternoon General Meeting) when we deal with matters concerning the running of our U3A. Each Committee member has an area of responsibility but, when it comes to things like our monthly meetings or special events such as the Summer Lunch, as many of us as possible pitch in to help.

No qualifications are required to become a member of the Committee. What’s most important is that you are enthusiastic and willing to get ‘stuck in’.

You’ll need to be proposed and seconded by two members—the proposal form is very simple to complete and can be obtained from our Secretary, Simon Coe.

I hope you will give thought to this request — it might be just up your street!

Peter Smith

The next monthly meeting will be on Thursday 8th February 2018.
