The Embroidery Group
This is a small group united in a passion for embroidery in all its many forms. Embroidery is an ancient art that can trace its roots back to the earliest of times, the stitchery used today would have been recognised by Anglo Saxon workers. The earliest fragments of English embroidery date to circa AD 915, and show a degree of skill which is hard to equal today, and showing an already long established tradition of work.
The group consists of embroiderers of varying expertise, from absolute beginners, to more experienced workers. A basic vocabulary of stitchery and techniques is taught by an experienced professional designer and embroiderer, interspersed with special projects. This Autumn the project will be how to make embroidered boxes, a decorative way to use small fragments of precious materials and oddments of embroidery.
The group is dedicated to preserving the skills of embroidery for future generations, and welcome any one who feels that they might like to learn embroidery, or improve their knowledge and skills.
We meet on the second Tuesday of each month at 2.00pm. For the foreseeable future, the venue will be Group Leader Suellen Pedley’s home, 44, Hunters Field, Stanford-in-the-Vale SN7 8LX.
