Report from Derbyshire, Autumn 2013

36 people from Faringdon U3A  travelled on this 5 day holiday to Derbyshire with Barnes Coaches .

I think all enjoyed it – I had many positive comments anyway. The weather was mixed, and when we went to the Crich Tram Museum it was awful,  but nevertheless enjoyment was found. We were lucky with the hotel. It couldn’t have been better:  modern, comfortable, and helpful  staff.

We visited Litchfield fleetingly on the way, where there was  a pretty cathedral to be seen, and the journey carried on into Derbyshire through Ashbourne, the gateway to Derbyshire. During our stay  we visited Chatsworth House, Bakewell, Chesterfield, the above museum, and Matlock. Some of our party went on a walk, and met us in Matlock; others dared the cable car up to Abraham Heights. And a couple had their buggies with them (me!) and these proved useful too. I will say at this point that they were both useful and a hindrance as when they couldn’t travel over the bumpy bits they had to be manhandled and this was where some of the group came to the rescue and did the helping. Some on the last day had a day off and stayed at the hotel, and they had a good time running a card school, and chatting. It just shows that although there is an itinerary you can do exactly what you like; if you want a day off, then have a day off.

In the evenings delicious meals were served just to our party on large tables. We moved around, thus talking to different people each night.  Afterwards we used the same room, and had freedom to play cards, or scrabble, or take part in a quiz. So that was great for us to keep on socializing instead of either sitting in a bar (where the drinks, the only down side, were a ridiculous price) or going to your room and watching TV. You could do that of course if you wanted. On the return journey our final visit was to the Back to Back houses, which were a reminder of our past lives for many of us. Or at least lives that we recalled from visiting grandparents etc.

A good time was had by all! Below is a selection of photographs – more will be available in the Gallery. Clicking on a photograph will let you see it full screen.

Join us in the Isle of Man next September, slightly longer, slightly dearer, but a sea journey too!
