Tuesday April 17th meeting:

April Quiz and Progress Reports

Your Cellar Team are delighted to have secured the services of Faringdon’s finest, most knowledgeable, fairest and most charming quizmaster team for our April 17 meeting. This devilish duo will be the highlight of the session, more than compensating for the AGM-type stuff that we need to get through first. We’ll be in teams of four for the quiz, which will include tasting four mystery wines. Bottles of wine will be awarded to the winning team’s members.

It’s now a year since the New Vintage Wine Group was launched and your Cellar Team are very keen to get your feedback on how things have gone over the first five meetings.

  1. July 2017, Brightwell Vineyard
  2. September, Shiraz review by Donna Rogers of Den Boer Wines
  3. November, Personal Favourites DIY tasting
  4. December, Sadlers Festive Lunch
  5. February 2018, Compare and Contrast tasting.

Did you enjoy all or only some of these? Were the prices about right? Has the format of the meetings been good? And do tell us about whatever else has bugged or pleased you, to help us plan the rest of this year and start looking at the 2019 programme.

The financial side has been a bit of a nail-biter at times as we wanted to provide excellent value for money whilst putting on events that give us a chance to taste rewarding wines. We’ve been so fortunate in having Maggie Robinson as our book-keeper and she’ll present a short summary of the year’s finances, as required by U3A Central.

The meeting is in the church Barber Rooms venue from 1400 to 1600 on Tuesday 17 April and will cost just £5. Click on the green button below for the booking form. Bookings close on Friday March 30, to give our quizmasters time to order in enough bottles. Payments are due very shortly after on April 3 and Maggie asks for you to pay electronically if possible please as it’s vastly more efficient than handling cheques. But please remember to tick the booking form box telling us which payment method you’ll use.

February’s meeting review: Compare and Contrast tasting

25 of us had a terrifically wide selection of wines to compare at February’s members’ presentations meeting, including two chardonnays from barely 100 miles apart and two sauvignon blancs from opposite sides of the Pacific. Is this a format worth repeating next year?

Tuesday  26 June – Vineyard visit

We’ve booked the two hour vineyard and winery tour, the Faringdon bus is hired, and the 10% discount on wine purchases negotiated. All we need now is a lovely sunny day for the visit to Chiltern Wines near Henley.

Tuesday 21 August – Which supermarket?

NB Same date but switched topic. We’ll taste four matched wines from local supermarkets like Tesco, Waitrose and Aldi and give them a rigorous blind assessment.

Tuesday 16 October – The world of sherry

NB New date and switched topic. Donna Rogers’ second favourite wine, after Oz shiraz, is sherry and she’ll take us through some half dozen expressions of this greatly undervalued but world-class wine.

Tuesday 11 December – Sadlers Festive Lunch

A key date for your diary.

We look forward to seeing all of you at our 17 April meeting and please remember, bookings for this close on March 30th with payment by April 3rd.

Kind regards,

The Cellar Team
