A big ‘Thank You’ first to Peter and Elizabeth Smith for their challenging, eclectic but always entertaining quiz at our April meeting. They certainly enlivened the otherwise dry AGM-type stuff the Cellar Team needed to go through.

June meeting
Our next meeting is an away match at Chiltern Valley Wines near Henley on Tuesday 26 June. This vineyard, established over 30 years ago, should give an interesting contrast to last year’s Brightwell visit. In addition to making 8 types of wine they brew five ales on site as well making 15 liqueurs. Our tour will include the winery and brewery plus, weather depending, viewing the vines. Their website says:

“Since our first harvest in 1984, we have produced an increasing range of fine, award-winning English wines to delight the eye and excite the palate. With scores of awards and commendations in blind-tasted national and international competitions, our wines have gained an enviable reputation for quality both here and abroad.

As a truly independent brewery, we are proud to have revived the tradition of farm-brewed, full mash, Real Ales using wooden-clad mash tun, copper, liquor and fermentation vessels. We combine tradition with the very latest technology in sterility and temperature control. The Master Brewer blends only the finest English malted barley to gain the flavour, fullness and depth of colour in our Ales, seasoning with choice English hops for aroma and bitterness.

Our two hour tour ‘behind the scenes’ around our Winery, Brewery and Liqueur production facilities demonstrates a fun and extensive learning experience. The tour is completed with a tutored 30-40 minute tasting of a generous selection of our Wines, Ales & Liqueurs. Fresh water and tasting notes are provided and usually some cheese and crackers too.”

And here’s an enthusiastic TripAdvisor comment, “For anyone interested in the production of wine and beer, this place is a must. We had an excellent guide (John) who was funny and informative. The overview of producing wine and beer was very professional, as was the tasting of 4 wines, 4 beers and various liqueurs afterwards. There was no pressure to buy when leaving too, which is a refreshing change. Lovely premises and well worth the cost of the visit.” There is a useful 10% on-the-day discount.
