Military History Group

In Memory of Frank (John) Risby

The Military History Group normally meets on the first Thursday of the month and we consider an eclectic range of topics. In the past few months we have covered SOE and Force 136 in Burma, the Battle of Britain, the Plains Indians, the Swedish Warship Vasa and the Battle for Normandy. Of necessity our meetings have been suspended over the lockdown.

Sadly one of our stalwart group members, Frank Risby passed away in June. Frank had a great enthusiasm for military history of any kind and I can honestly say that he hardly missed a Thursday morning session. He regularly brought us biscuits and coffee to sustain us before we settled down.

Frank’s pet subject was, of course, any aspect of the American Civil War and in his memory I am planning to rerun my talk on the American Civil War updated with perspectives on slavery in the context of recent Black Lives Matter controversy.

This will be a Zoom meeting at the usual time of 10.30am on Thursday 3rd September 2020. Please bear with us as this will be our first attempt at a Zoom meeting!

If you wish to join us, please contact Bjorn Watson at to be included in the Zoom meeting.
